The Teaching English as a Second Language Electronic Journal (TESL-EJ): A Bibliometric Analysis of the First 99 Issues

February 2022 marks the 100th issue of Teaching English as a Second Language Electronic Journal (TESL-EJ), set up in 1994 brainchild group scholars who saw need for freely distributed electronic academic journal covering diverse array interests within teaching second language long before term “open access” was coined. The present study constitutes bibliometric analysis first 99 issues TESL-EJ. Through cross-sectional and historical range key metrics, notably scale its output citations by other authors, frequency topics explored, most productive influential author affiliations countries, extent collaboration, analyzes growth development research activity reflected publication’s during period under study. found that nature journal’s has evolved over years from anecdotal practitioner reviews thought pieces to rigorous empirical research. As US-based journal, North American scholarship is well-represented across TESL-EJ’s output, particularly studies contextualized tertiary-level settings. There been consistent tendency towards non-specialist speakers languages (TESOL), notably, EFL, writing, learning, teacher, learner, reflective large, global readership. implications stakeholders, editorial team considering submission, are discussed.
